“A third way of seeing, which takes into account both the part and the whole and offers solutions beyond winners and losers. We haven’t invented this new system yet. You could say we’re at the Magna Carta stage of this vision as scientists, policymakers, and enlightened citizens work together throughout the world, holding complex dialogues and hammering out voluntary agreements. But for this understanding of our interconnectedness to become common sense, we will need a new narrative of the future of democracy to be made universally vivid first,” Robb Smith wrote.
Historically speaking, new worldviews have been responsible for causing major social transformations, says futurist Barbara Marx Hubbard. It occurred in the Renaissance when the idea of progress through knowledge was born. It happened in the United States when the principles of democracy and freedom became institutions. “Now once again a new world view is arising,” writes Hubbard. “This idea is the culmination of all human history. It holds the promise of fulfilling the great aspirations of the past and heralds the advent of the next phase of our evolution. It is the idea of conscious evolution.”
In this new phase evolution will be driven intentionally, by humanity. The evolutionary worldview that emerges from an understanding of our role in the new phase has the potential to transform the nature of human existence.
At present humanity is lost. We don’t know what we are doing here. We are without a worldview that can point to our place and purpose in the universe and that can also withstand rational scrutiny.
It is as if evolution is a developmental process. Just as a human embryo is organized to develop through a number of stages to produce an adult, evolution tends to produce a particular sequence of outcomes of increasing complexity. Initially, evolution moves in this direction of its own accord. However, at a particular point evolution will continue to advance only if certain conditions are met: organisms must emerge that awaken to the possibility that they are living in the midst of a developmental process; they must realize that the continued success of the process depends on them; and they must commit to actively moving the process forward.
Across the planet at the beginning of the twenty first century, individuals are beginning to realize the importance of the transition to Conscious Evolution. They know that they themselves have a significant role to play if the transition is to be completed successfully.
